How to Recover Deleted Emails in AOL Mail
Get deleted AOL emails back from Trash — quickly, because AOL empties it after 7 days — and track down mail that only looks deleted.
Deleted AOL emails go to the Trash folder first — but not for long. AOL empties Trash automatically after 7 days, and that setting can’t be changed. If you’ve just deleted something by mistake, act now.
Restore an email from Trash
- Click the Trash folder.
- Select the message you want back.
- Click Restore to inbox at the top of the page.
In the AOL Mail app, deleted email also moves to Trash, “where it’ll be emptied later” — so restore it from there the same way.
How long AOL keeps deleted mail
| Folder | Emptied automatically after |
|---|---|
| Trash | 7 days |
| Spam | 30 days |
AOL says these are set system-wide and can’t be changed.
Emptied from Trash or older than 7 days?
AOL’s help page says that if emails were permanently deleted or went missing in the last 7 days, you can contact AOL and it will do what it can to recover them. There’s no self-service restore button for this.
About phone help: AOL’s help pages advertise a paid premium support line. If you want it, use only the number shown on help.aol.com itself — search results are full of look-alike “AOL support” numbers run by scammers. We never list phone numbers on this site.
Make sure it was really deleted
Mail that seems to have vanished often hasn’t been deleted at all. AOL’s own checklist:
- Other folders: a filter may have moved it — see AOL Mail filters.
- Spam: open it, select the message and click Not Spam.
- An email app using POP: AOL names this one of the most common causes — an app such as Outlook downloading mail and deleting it from AOL’s server. Turn on the app’s option to keep email on the server, or switch the account to IMAP (AOL Mail settings).
- Long inactivity: AOL deletes accounts that haven’t been signed in to for 24 months.
Don’t lose it next time
- Move mail you might need into a folder, rather than deleting it.
- Keep important attachments saved somewhere else too.
- Check Trash before the week is up if you’ve been doing a big clean-out — in the app you can delete up to 10,000 emails in one go, which makes mistakes easy.
