How to Unsubscribe from Emails in Gmail

Use Gmail’s Unsubscribe button or the Manage subscriptions page to stop newsletters and promotions — and know the difference between unsubscribing and blocking.

Gmail can unsubscribe you from newsletters and promotional email for you — one email at a time, or from a single page that lists everyone you’re subscribed to. Unsubscribing is better than deleting the same promotions every week, and it’s different from blocking.

Unsubscribe from one email

On a computer

  1. Open Gmail at mail.google.com and open the newsletter or promotion.
  2. Click Unsubscribe next to the sender’s name.
  3. In the pop-up, choose Unsubscribe or Go to website.

On Android

  1. Open an email from the sender in the Gmail app.
  2. Tap Unsubscribe next to the sender’s name.
  3. Choose Unsubscribe or Go to website.

Some senders only let you unsubscribe on their own website. Their emails show Go to website instead of Unsubscribe.

Unsubscribe from many senders: Manage subscriptions

Google is rolling this page out gradually, so you may not have it yet.

  • Computer: on the left, click More › Manage subscriptions. Next to a sender — and the number of emails they’ve sent you recently — click Unsubscribe.
  • Android: tap the menu at the top left, then Manage subscriptions.
  • iPhone or iPad: tap the menu at the top left, then Manage subscriptions, and tap Unsubscribe to the right of a sender.

Unsubscribing here removes you from all of that sender’s active mailing lists. Unsubscribing from a single email may only remove you from one list. Click a sender’s name or picture to see their emails first, in case there’s anything you want to keep.

What happens after you unsubscribe

  • The sender can take a few days to process it, so a few more emails may arrive.
  • New emails from that sender go to Spam, with a banner explaining why. To move one back, click Report not spam.
  • You may see a list identifier in place of the sender’s name.

Unsubscribe or block?

Blocking doesn’t take you off a mailing list — it only sends that sender’s future emails to Spam. For newsletters and shops you signed up to, unsubscribe. For a sender who ignores you or a person you don’t want to hear from, block them. If Gmail shows a pop-up sending you to the sender’s website, you can choose Block instead.

If an email looks like phishing rather than a newsletter you signed up for, don’t click anything in it — the email security hub explains how to check it.

Clear out what’s already there

To delete a sender’s old emails in one go, search for them (for example from:news@shop.example), tick the select box at the top, click the link to select all conversations that match, then click Delete. The Gmail Search Builder writes the search for you. Deleted mail waits in Trash for 30 days — see recovering deleted Gmail if you go too far.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Where is Manage subscriptions in Gmail?

On a computer, click More on the left, then Manage subscriptions. In the app, tap the menu at the top left. Google is rolling it out gradually.

Why am I still getting emails after unsubscribing in Gmail?

Senders can take a few days to process the request. After you unsubscribe, new emails from them go to Spam.

Does blocking a sender in Gmail unsubscribe me?

No. Blocking only sends their future emails to Spam; you’re still on their mailing list.

Why is there no Unsubscribe button on some emails?

Some senders require you to unsubscribe on their website, so Gmail shows Go to website instead.
