How to Recover Deleted Emails in Gmail

Deleted Gmail messages wait in Trash for up to 30 days. Here’s how to move them back on any device, where else to look, and what can’t be recovered.

When you delete an email in Gmail, it goes to Trash and stays there for up to 30 days. During that time you can move it back. After 30 days Gmail deletes it permanently, and Google says it can’t be recovered — so if you’re looking for something, start now.

Recover from Trash on a computer

  1. Open Gmail. On the left, click More, then Trash.
  2. Tick the box next to each message you want back.
  3. At the top, click Move to and choose where it should go — usually your inbox.

Recover on Android

  1. In the Gmail app, tap the menu at the top left, then Trash.
  2. Touch and hold each message you want to restore.
  3. At the top right, tap More › Move to, then pick a folder.

Recover on iPhone or iPad

  1. In the Gmail app, tap the menu at the top left, then Trash.
  2. Press and hold each message you want to restore.
  3. At the top right, tap More › Move, then choose where it goes.

Not in Trash? Search everywhere

A missing email often isn’t deleted at all. Open the search options in the search bar, change the dropdown from All Mail to Mail & Spam & Trash, type anything you remember — a name, a word from the subject — and click Search. Leave fields blank if you’re not sure.

  • Found it in Spam? Open it and mark it Not spam. Like Trash, Spam is emptied after 30 days.
  • Archived by mistake? Archived mail sits in All mail, not Trash — see archiving in Gmail.
  • Need a sharper search? The Gmail Search Builder builds one by sender, date or attachment.

Why emails disappear from Gmail

Google’s own checklist for missing mail, in order:

  • A filter. Go to Settings › See all settings › Filters and Blocked Addresses and look for filters with Delete it or Skip Inbox. See Gmail filters.
  • Forwarding. On the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, check what happens to Gmail’s copy. A forwarding address you don’t recognise may mean someone else has access — select Disable forwarding and read Gmail security.
  • Another app or device. Gmail keeps one copy of each email, so deleting it in any synced app or device deletes it everywhere. If you use POP, choose Keep Gmail’s copy in the inbox.
  • Full storage. When your Google storage is full you may stop receiving email — see Gmail storage full.

What can’t be recovered

  • Messages that have been in Trash or Spam for more than 30 days.
  • Messages removed with Delete forever or Empty Trash now.
  • Deleted drafts — they never go to Trash.

When you’re signed in, Google’s “Gmail messages are missing” help page ends with an option to request recovery. Google doesn’t say when it can help, so treat it as a last resort.

Work or school account? A Google Workspace administrator can restore Gmail permanently deleted within the last 25 days, from the Admin console. Ask your IT team quickly.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does Gmail keep deleted emails?

Up to 30 days in Trash. After that they’re permanently deleted and Google says they can’t be recovered.

Can I recover emails deleted from Gmail Trash?

Not on a personal account. Once Trash is emptied or 30 days pass, the messages are gone. A Workspace administrator can restore mail deleted within the last 25 days.

Can I recover a deleted Gmail draft?

No. Deleted drafts don’t go to Trash and can’t be recovered.

Why did my emails disappear from Gmail?

Check Trash, Spam and All mail first, then filters that delete or skip the inbox, forwarding settings, and apps that delete mail on the server.
