Help with GMX sign-in, recovery, security and mail-client settings
Independent guide — not affiliated with or endorsed by GMX.
GMX is an email service operated by 1&1 Mail & Media GmbH, part of United Internet. GMX.com serves international users, while GMX.net is the German service; registration for new accounts is not available in every country.
Access through third-party mail applications is disabled by default and must be enabled in the GMX settings before IMAP, POP3 or SMTP will work. Accounts using gmx.com and gmx.net also require different server hostnames and password-recovery pages.

IMAP and POP access are disabled by default. Enable them under Settings → POP3 & IMAP in the GMX web interface first.
Both are GMX services operated by the same company, but they use different mail-server hostnames and password-recovery pages.
For gmx.com, use imap.gmx.com on port 993 with SSL/TLS, pop.gmx.com on port 995 with SSL/TLS, and mail.gmx.com on port 587 with STARTTLS or port 465 with SSL/TLS.
If two-factor authentication is enabled, use an application-specific password in an external mail program instead of your normal GMX password.
GMX does not offer registration in every country. Registration can also fail because of a temporarily blocked or blocklisted IP address, an unavailable email address or an unacceptable password.
