How to Create a Yandex Mail Account

Register a free Yandex ID and mailbox, choose a username you'll keep for good, and set up the phone number and mail collector you'll want later.

Creating a Yandex Mail address means creating a Yandex ID. The mailbox comes with it, and so does access to other Yandex services. The one decision that needs care is the username: you can't change it after registration.

Register step by step

  1. Open the registration page at passport.yandex.com.
  2. Enter your name and surname.
  3. Create or pick a unique username. It becomes your address and your login for Mail and other Yandex services.
  4. Choose a password for your Yandex ID.
  5. Enter your mobile phone number and type in the code Yandex sends by text message. The number is used to restore your password and to send you notifications.
  6. Tick the box accepting the User Agreement and consenting to the processing of personal data.
  7. Click Register.

Your username and address

Your address is your username, followed by @yandex.com or one of Yandex's domain aliases — the alias is picked automatically during registration. Because the username is permanent, the only way to get a different one later is to register a new account (Add account, then Register), so choose something you're happy to keep and to give out for years.

Password rules

Use upper- and lowercase Latin letters, numbers and punctuation. Only two characters aren't allowed: the tilde ~ and the apostrophe '. Yandex also advises against passwords you use elsewhere, common words or predictable sequences, and personal details such as names and dates.

Bring your old email with you

If you're moving from another provider, set up the mail collector to import messages from your old mailbox, and add the old address as an alternative address if you want to keep sending from it.

After you sign up

  • Turn on two-factor authentication with Yandex Key — see Yandex Mail security.
  • Keep the phone number current; you can change it later on the Mobile numbers page of Yandex ID.
  • Use the mailbox now and then: Yandex may freeze a mailbox that hasn't been used for more than 24 months.
  • To read your mail in another email app, follow Yandex Mail server settings.
