Most Yandex Mail problems fall into three groups: you can't sign in at all, the mailbox has been frozen, or an email program won't connect or send. Start with the group that matches.
You can't sign in on the website
- Type your username and password by hand instead of letting the browser fill them in — the full sign-in steps are in logging in to Yandex Mail.
- If you've forgotten the password, use the recovery page — see resetting your Yandex password.
- If Yandex asks for a text-message code or your security question, that's its check for a new device, location or VPN — complete it to continue.
Your mailbox has been frozen
Yandex may freeze a mailbox that hasn't been used for more than 24 months; it sends warnings 30 and 10 days beforehand. A frozen mailbox doesn't receive new mail and can't be opened in email programs. Log in and click Yes, unfreeze within six months and your emails and settings come back. After six months the mailbox is deleted for good — you'd get a new, empty mailbox at the same address, and your Yandex ID itself stays active.
An email program won't connect
First check the switches: in Yandex Mail open Settings → Email clients, select From the imap.yandex.com server via IMAP and make sure App passwords and OAuth tokens is enabled. Then match the error message:
- "No connection with server" — sign in on the Yandex Mail website with the same username and password, typed by hand. If the website works and the error doesn't go away, you may not have accepted the User Agreement yet: log in to the web interface once. (In a company account, the administrator must do this for each mailbox.)
- "Authentication required", "Sender address rejected: Access denied" or "Send auth command first" — turn on SMTP authentication in the program's outgoing server settings.
- "Sender address rejected: not owned by auth user" — the From address must be the same address you authenticate with.
- "Login failure or POP3 disabled" — check the password and, if you use POP3, enable it under Email clients. Yandex no longer updates POP3 and recommends IMAP.
- "Bad address mailbox syntax" — correct the From address in the account settings.
- "Message rejected under suspicion of SPAM" — send a test message from the website, and scan your computer for viruses.
Server names and ports are listed in Yandex Mail server settings.
The program keeps asking for your password
Enter the current credentials in the program — an app password, not your main one — wait a few hours for it to sync, then sign in on the website again; Yandex may show a captcha.
Mail isn't sending or arriving
Check your internet connection, and temporarily turn off antivirus, firewall or proxy software to see if one is blocking the connection. If Yandex has blocked sending from your account, linking a phone number and using your real name in Yandex ID helps; Yandex says blocked accounts usually unblock within a couple of hours.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why does Yandex say 'Sender address rejected: not owned by auth user'?
The From address in your email program doesn't match the address you authenticate with. Make them the same.
My Yandex mailbox is frozen. Can I get my emails back?
Yes, within six months. Log in and click Yes, unfreeze, and Yandex restores your emails and settings. After six months they're deleted.
Why won't my email app connect to Yandex Mail?
Usually IMAP or 'App passwords and OAuth tokens' is switched off under Settings → Email clients, or the app is using your main password instead of an app password.
Should I use POP3 or IMAP with Yandex?
IMAP. Yandex says it no longer updates POP3 and recommends IMAP.
