Tuta

Encrypted German email — no IMAP or SMTP by design

Open Tuta login ↗ 6 guides available

Independent guide — not affiliated with or endorsed by Tuta.

Tuta — formerly Tutanota — encrypts the entire mailbox, including subject lines and contacts. Because standard IMAP and SMTP would require handing over readable mail, Tuta does not offer them at all. Access is through the web application or Tuta's own desktop and mobile clients, which handle decryption locally.

Tuta questions

Can I add Tuta to Thunderbird or Outlook?

Not through the normal IMAP, POP3 or SMTP account setup. Tuta does not provide these protocols, so adding the account through Thunderbird’s standard account wizard or Microsoft Outlook will not work.

However, Tuta now offers an official Tuta Mail add-on for Thunderbird. The add-on opens the Tuta web application inside a Thunderbird tab; it is not an IMAP or SMTP connection. For complete offline access, notifications, encrypted search and email import or export, use Tuta’s official desktop application.

Why does Tuta not support IMAP?

IMAP would require the server to hand over readable messages, which is incompatible with encrypting the whole mailbox. The trade-off is deliberate.
