How to Reset Your Cox Email Password (cox.net on Yahoo)

Since cox.net email moved to Yahoo, password recovery is Yahoo’s. Here’s where to reset it and what to update afterwards.

Before the move, Cox handled forgotten cox.net passwords. Now that cox.net email runs on Yahoo Mail, Yahoo does. Cox’s own tip is simple: after completing the move, go to Yahoo Mail and visit recovery.yahoo.com.

Reset a forgotten password

  1. Go to recovery.yahoo.com.
  2. Enter your full email address, including @cox.net.
  3. Follow Yahoo’s prompts to verify it’s you and create a new password.

Yahoo’s recovery relies on the recovery phone number or email address on the account, so keep those up to date once you’re back in. Our Yahoo Mail password reset guide covers Yahoo’s recovery steps in detail — they’re the same for cox.net addresses.

Don’t use the old Cox login page

Cox’s “Forgot User ID?” and “Forgot Password” links on the Cox email login page were for accounts before the move. Cox says the transition is complete, so cox.net passwords now live with Yahoo.

After you reset

  • Email programs keep working only with app passwords. Yahoo’s app passwords stay active even after you change your main password, so Outlook or Apple Mail may keep working — but if you reset because you think someone got in, delete old app passwords and make new ones. Steps in Cox email settings.
  • Phones using the Yahoo option will ask you to sign in again with the new password.
  • Turn on extra protection. Yahoo’s security options apply to cox.net accounts too — see Yahoo Mail security.

Thinking of leaving cox.net instead?

Cox says you can’t keep a cox.net address with any provider other than Yahoo. If you’d rather start fresh elsewhere, set up the new address first, then move what you need: for exporting contacts, calendars and emails after the move to Yahoo, Cox points to Yahoo’s help on transferring emails and contacts between accounts. Keep signing in to the cox.net mailbox until everything important has moved.

Getting help

Cox says that after the move, Yahoo is your email provider and Cox no longer manages or supports email — contact Yahoo at help.yahoo.com. Cox also notes Yahoo may charge for email support on some issues beyond sign-in help.

Scammers target cox.net users with fake “Cox email support” numbers and “your account will be closed” emails. Never give a password or verification code to someone who contacted you — the email security hub explains the tricks. Back to Cox email login.
